"Wrong Delivery" is the second episode of the second season and 15th overall of Abbott Elementary. It aired on September 28, 2022.
Description[]
After Janine gets a look at the new charter school down the street, she becomes determined to fix up Abbott and make it just as good. As Gregory goes out of his way to avoid Barbara due to an awkward situation with his personal life, and Ava takes to the school library to host a "Shark Tank"-style pitch to decide what to do with the rest of the funds from the grant.
Plot[]
Gregory is complaining about the heat. He asks if the A/C is on and Jacob answers that the A/C is on but is also very old. Gregory then notices a calendar for 2021 on the wall, so he takes it off, only to reveal that it is covering a hole in the wall. Janine suggests that they should use the grant money to fix the broken wall. However, Barbara responds that they already decided that they were going to use that money to buy cleaning supplies.
Ava arrives and starts hitting on Gregory. She takes it back, though, saying that she respects Barbara and her daughter, Taylor, too much to hit on him publicly. He looks at Barbara and starts feeling uncomfortable. Gregory then proceeds to tell the camera that he and Taylor are doing fine, but it’s an awkward situation since he is working with Barbara.
Sometime later, Ava asks the teachers who ordered the new social studies books. Janine skims through them and notes that the books are actually updated. Melissa inspects the box and informs them that the books are not for them but for Addington Elementary, the school down the street. Barbara comments that one of the perks of turning into a charter school is being able to obtain new books. Melissa adds that she heard that the school has a lot of good things. Janine refuses to believe that their school is too different from Addington. Barbara suggests that they walk over to the charter school to find out for themselves during lunch.
During lunch, the group delivers the books to Addington. Barbara immediately notices the working A/C as they walk in. The others also notice a few upgrades from Abbott, such as a younger Mr. Johnson and freshly painted colorful walls. Janine still refuses to see that Addington is that much better than Abbott, saying that it’s not that great. Melissa tells her that she doesn’t have to lie about it since it is clear that Addington is just that much better than Abbott.
While walking down the hall, they run into Tina Schwartz, a former teacher at Abbott. Janine hands her the books that were mistakenly delivered to Abbott. Tina then offers to give them a quick tour around Addington. She shows them their language lab, where the students are learning French. She then shows them their computer lab, which improved their students’ reading scores across the board. She mentions that they had a mice problem, but they called people to humanely get rid of them. Just then, a student runs by them in the hall, and a teacher who sounds like Melissa chases after her. Melissa stares the teacher down and tells the others that they should return to Abbott. Jacob muses that the teacher is like Melissa’s charter school doppelganger.
Back at Abbott, Gregory goes to Jacob to ask him how to open the window to his classroom. Barbara demonstrated how to do it before, but he couldn’t remember how to do it himself. Jacob tells him that he doesn’t know how to open the window and that he should just ask Barbara. He says that a little heat is good for the students, but then admits that he is avoiding Barbara at the moment because things with Taylor aren’t going great.
Meanwhile, Janine is picking out paint for her classroom walls. She states that Abbott is her home and that she has decided to brighten the place up herself. And in doing so, they’ll be just as good as Addington. Ava walks by and sees the paint. She tells Janine that they are not Addington, and that Abbott is a public school. As such, you can’t paint the walls because classroom décor is set by the Philadelphia Department of Education, Animal Shelters, and Traffic. A student then mumbles that her brother goes to Addington and that they take a field trip every month and that they even have a computer lab.
After her class, Janine rushes to the teachers’ lounge and excitedly shares her suggestion on how they can spend the grant money. Melissa reminds her that they already agreed on spending it on baby wipes and cleaning supplies. Barbara adds that they just need to stick to the basics. Janine, however, says that the basics aren’t good enough. She suggests that they turn the library into a computer lab. Ava interjects, saying that they only have enough money to buy one computer. The teachers voice other suggestions for the grant money. This gives Ava the idea to hold a Shark Tank-like presentation for those who want to sell their ideas on what to do with the money.
Janine stays up all night to prepare visual aids for her presentation the following day. She is excited to turn Abbott into a “crown jewel of the neighborhood.”
Meanwhile, Barbara and Gregory bump into each other in the teachers’ lounge. Jacob notices how awkward it is and tells Gregory that he hopes he and Taylor will turn out fine. Gregory replies that he doesn’t think it will ever be fine, but he doesn’t think he can be the one to end their relationship. He thinks that if he hurts Taylor, he’ll end up hurting Barbara as well. Mr. Johnson overhears and joins the conversation. Jacob suggests that since he can’t ghost her, he could just let their relationship peter out.
In the library, Ava holds the “Shark Tank” with Courtney and Mr. Johnson as fellow judges. A few school staff and teachers make their presentations, but none of them impress the judges. Meanwhile, Janine practices her presentation in front of Gregory to get his opinion. Gregory gives her constructive criticism. Janine appreciates this and tells him that is why she came to him—because he was an honest, straight-up guy. Gregory makes a realization about how to deal with his relationship woes.
Devin makes a presentation about a water ice truck, but Ava rejects it because he was making a pitch for his personal business. Janine then makes an over-the-top pitch with charts and matching choreography. After Janine makes her presentation, all the participants gather in the teachers' lounge to wait for the announcement of the winner. The judges come in and declare Janine as the winner. Before Janine can finish soaking in her victory, a student enters the lounge, screaming that they should go to the cafeteria. There, they find a swarm of mice running around.
After some investigation, Mr. Johnson determines that the mice came from Addington Elementary after the school humanely got rid of its mice problem. The mice were roaming the streets, looking for somewhere else to go, and ended up in Abbott. Mr. Johnson can’t get rid of the mice himself, so they’ll have to hire exterminators. However, they don’t have money to hire them, so they’ll have to use the grant money. This crushes Janine.
Later, Gregory is trying to open his classroom window, and as Barbara walks by, he calls to her to ask for help. She helps him, and Gregory uses this opportunity to speak with her about Taylor. Barbara says she also wanted to speak with Gregory and says she is sorry that he and Taylor didn’t work out. Seeing Gregory’s look of surprise, Barbara realizes that the two haven’t officially ended their relationship yet. Barbara reveals that Taylor has been petering out on Gregory the whole time. When Gregory asks why, Barbara replies that Taylor thinks Gregory is a “broke boi” and their conversation ends awkwardly.
Janine, Barbara, and Melissa are walking together, and Melissa apologizes to Janine if they seemed mean about her computer idea. She explains that after dealing with the stuff they deal with in a public school, they just want the basics, if they are able to get anything at all. Janine admits that when she saw Addington, she freaked and just wanted to get something special for Abbott.
Hearing Janine’s speech about wanting to make students feel special, Ava grants the remaining grant money (after hiring the exterminator) to Devin, who sets up his water ice truck just outside school. The students express their happiness over the free water ice. An Addington student walks by, sees the truck and expresses mild envy. Melissa’s Addington doppelganger also walks by, and Melissa starts insulting her. Janine is appalled by Melissa’s rudeness, but the latter reveals that the doppelganger is actually her sister, so she can say whatever she wants. Melissa stomps off before Janine can ask any more questions.
Meanwhile, Jacob lauds Ava for the water ice truck. Barbara agrees saying that it's good that the kids can feel special today. Jacob then tells Janine that he’s having so much fun but wishes that Gregory could also enjoy it. He tells Janine that he and Taylor are on the outs, so Janine goes to the truck and orders a water ice and gives it to Gregory.
Later, in the teachers’ lounge, Mr. Johnson asks Gregory about his petering out. Gregory responds that Taylor was already petering out on him. Jacob says that it’s awesome because it’s what people always did to him, so they’ll have one more thing in common.
