Season 2[]
In Mom, Vanetta had called her daughter, Janine, but the latter was unable to answer her call. A while later, Vanetta showed up at Abbott claiming that she was so worried Janine had not answered her call that she had to go and check up on her, although Janine claimed that she called her back, but Vanetta did not answer. Because Vanetta had entered the school without a visitor's badge, Janine led her to the Administrative Office to get her one. On the way, they ran into Barbara and Ava. Barbara and Vanetta exchanged some small talk, while Ava jokingly remarked to Vanetta that she thought genetics was wild because Vanetta was cool. Ava tried to say that Janine was not cool, but when Vanetta squared up, Ava chose to retreat.
The mother and daughter updated each other on what was going on in their lives since they last spoke six months ago. Vanetta shared that she now had a job that she liked because it was work-from-home, but that she was having issues with her phone bill. She owed $639.17 to the phone company for going over her data, and they had threatened to turn her phone off. While Janine was genuinely happy to see her mother, she asked if Vanetta only came to visit to ask for money. Vanetta denied this and proceeded to brush off the issue with her phone.
Janine shared with Barbara her mother's drama with her cellphone bill, which had Barbara worried that Janine would be spending her vacation money just to pay for her mother's phone bill. Later, Barbara found Vanetta in the teachers' lounge taking some medicine and food from the drawers. Barbara confronted Vanetta about her bill situation, but Vanetta immediately became defensive and told Barbara that that was a personal matter and that it was none of her business. Vanetta added that she never asked her daughter for help, but that Janine would do what is right. Barbara agreed that Janine would be helping her at her own expense and would be foregoing a very important trip. Barbara then offered to pay her phone bill instead without Janine's knowledge. Before the two could come to an agreement, Janine walked in on the two.
Janine asked to speak to her mother in her classroom. On the way, Vanetta was ranting about how Barbara was overstepping her bounds and how judgy she was. She then added a few more (false) details to how things went down before Janine showed up. Janine, unable to believe what her mother was saying about Barbara, asked her mother the real reason why she came to Abbott. Janine had been trying to call her for months, but never got a response. Vanetta insisted that she just missed her daughter but was unable to return her calls because she was busy. Accepting the real reason for why her mother was there, Janine offered to help her mother out with her phone bill. She said that she was going to call the phone company to set up a payment plan so that they can turn her phone back on. She also said that she was going to give Vanetta the money, but only for the first two payments because she didn't have the rest of the money to spare. Vanetta insisted that she was going to figure it out but accepted Janine's offer, nonetheless. Somehow seeing what her daughter was sacrificing for her, Vanetta told Janine that she loved her and the two share a hug.
