Abbott Elementary Wiki

Gregory Thompson Eddie is a main character in ABC's hit mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary. He is a First Grade teacher at Abbott. Greg interviewed at the Willard R. Abbott Elementary to be principal and got it, however, because Ava Coleman caught the superintendent cheating on his wife, he made her principal, and Greg was hired as a substitute first-grade teacher. After talking with the superintendent, Greg becomes a full-time teacher.

He is portrayed by actor Tyler James Williams.

Personality[]

Gregory is nonconfrontational as he does not tell Ava that he is uncomfortable whenever she makes a pass at him. Moreover, it took a while for him to confront the parent of one of his students about their tardiness in class.

He is shown to be level-headed as when there was a partial power outage in school, he tries to think of a solution and tells everyone to stay calm.

He is a bit serious and most of the time, he is usually stoic, but he does show that he has a sense of humor. He is a bit of a perfectionist, but proactive, like when he sees Janine's crooked map and immediately fixes the frame. However, when he is comfortable, he loosens up and is able to share jokes with his co-workers. In Work Family, he showed his fun-side when he danced with his students during Tariq's F.A.D.E. performance.

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Gregory Eddie grew up in Baltimore. In Mother's Day, Gregory revealed that his mother, Faith, passed away when he was 9 years old.

For the first 20 years of his life, he spent every summer vacation "planting, mowing and raking" at his grandfather's landscaping business, Eddie Lawn & Care. His father is Martin Eddie. That resulted in Greg not being able to stand gardening at all.[6]

As a young man he interned at the Baltimore School Board for two summers and went to school to become a Principal. He got his Masters in Educational Leadership and went through a program specifically meant to encourage young black men to become principals.[7]

Season One[]

Pilot Promotion 15

Gregory arrives at Abbott Elementary to substitute for Ms. Schwartz.

In Pilot, Gregory arrived at Abbott Elementary as a substitute teacher to replace Tina Schwartz, who was fired for "punting a student." When he arrived, Ava told him that she thought her colleagues had hired a male stripper for her, immediately making him uncomfortable. He had initially applied to be the school's principal and thought he got the job but "something happened," although it was revealed that Ava had blackmailed the superintendent to get the job instead.

Later that day, he helped a student who peed himself by accompanying him to the bathroom. It is there where he first met Janine, who tried to call security on him on account of him being in the bathroom holding a student's pants.

He joined the other teachers when Ava called for a "trust workshop" but refused to participate when Ava asked him to say something bad about Janine.

He appreciated what Janine was trying to do for her students and acknowledged that she was on a mission and that it was cool to see. Initially, he said that he took the substitute teacher job so he could become the principal, but when Janine asked if he was subbing to go full time, he responded that he would have to see but that the job definitely surprised him. Janine hoped he would stay for the kids, and he told the camera crew that he would stick around for a little while for the kids.

Gregory tried to confront his student's mother regarding her son's tardiness in class.

In Light Bulb, one of Gregory’s students arrived at his class with his mother an hour late, but he failed to confront the parent. He asked Barbara for some advice on how to handle it, and Barbara told him he should talk to the mom. He did not want to as he thought that being a substitute teacher, he shouldn’t deal with parents. It took Barbara tricking him to going to her nail salon, the same nail salon the student’s mother went to, and a bit of coaxing for him to get over the awkwardness of the interaction to confront the mother about her son coming in late. He convinced her to have her son to school earlier and the mother thanked him for being a teacher that cared for his students.

When Barbara told him that being a teacher meant he had to learn to deal with awkward interactions and that he should learn to say what he needed to get what he wanted. He took this advice to muster up some courage and asked Janine to grab a bite with him, although Jacob invited himself to join them.
