Denzel Collins is a recurring character in the first season of Abbott Elementary. He was the superintendent of the Philadelphia school district which contains Abbott and appointed Ava principal of the school after she blackmailed him. In Season 3, he was replaced as superintendent by someone named John Reynolds.

He is portrayed by Reggie Hayes, who was nominated for the Black Reel Television Award for Outstanding Guest Actor, Comedy Series for his performance.

History

Prior to the beginning of the series Collins appointed Ava as the principal of Abbott Elementary after she caught him cheating on his wife with the deaconess of his church and she blackmailed him into giving her the job to keep his secret hidden. In previous years he allocated Abbott generous funds as part of this blackmail.

Season 1

In Open House, Collins attended Abbott's open house event where Ava gave him a tour of the school and he informed her that she no longer had any blackmail to use against him because he had divorced his wife and married the deaconess, who he left the open house arm-in-arm with.

In Ava vs. Superintendent, Ava no longer had anything to hold over Collins, which meant that Ava had to attempt to genuinely impress him and the rest of the district board to get Abbott the funds it required, else her job was on the line.

On the day when Ava was to make her presentation in front of the school board, Collins ran into Gregory. He suggested that the latter email him if he was still interested in becoming principal since there would likely be a vacancy due to Ava's incompetence. After Ava's impassioned speech, he and the board were impressed. However, he still refused to grant Abbott discretionary funds because he could not get over being blackmailed.
