Ayesha Teagues is a recurring character in Abbott Elementary. She is the sister of Janine Teagues. She currently resides in Denver, Colorado[2] after moving there to get away from their mother.

She is portrayed by Ayo Edebiri.

Personality[]

Not much is seen of Ayesha during the series. The people who meet her, such as Jacob and Erika, find her cool and interesting. Due to her relationship with their mother, Ayesha always tends to only look out for herself. She sees herself as a screw-up because of how she compares to Janine, who she says is perfect.

History[]

Early Life[]

Ayesha and Janine have a rocky relationship with their mother, who, according to Janine, never even taught them how to cook.[3] When Ayesha was younger, their mother would do things that would really upset her and they would get into squabbles.[4] This relationship with their estranged mother caused her to move to Colorado because she couldn't take her anymore.[3] Every time she came to visit Janine, she didn't want their mother to know because it would lead to them squabbling.[4]

It was implied by Jacob Hill that Janine and Ayesha do not share the same father, as he called Ayesha, Janine's "sister from another mister."[1]

Season 2[]

In The Principal's Office, Melissa's issues with her sister caused Janine to remember how much she missed Ayesha. This feeling drove her to setup an unsuccessful, forced reconciliation between Melissa and Kristin Marie.

In Fight, Barbara made Janine realize that sometimes two people just don't like each other and that she didn't have to choose between her mother and sister. So, Janine called Ayesha and left her a voicemail which invited her to come and visit. She reassured her that she wouldn't tell their mother.

In Valentine's Day, Janine FaceTimed Ayesha since it was her birthday. Jacob had asked to join in because he wanted to meet Ayesha. During the call, Janine acted annoyed with Ayesha, although Jacob thought that she was cool and someone he might become good friends with.

In Teacher Appreciation, Ayesha came to Philadelphia to visit Janine. Janine had prepared some activities for when she arrived, but Ayesha already had plans to go out with friends that evening. This disappointed Janine which made things awkward. Janine decided to brush it off and suggested that they spend time together tomorrow instead during game night. Ayesha sarcastically responded that she felt like she couldn't miss game night even if she wanted to.

During game night, Ayesha, Erika, Jacob, Janine, and Gregory were in attendance. Ayesha was sharing funny anecdotes while the others listened intently and laughed. Nobody could understand the game, Drought, which Jacob brought so Erika asked for something to drink. Janine had prepared a short island iced tea, but was short on ingredients, so it was made of just Coke and ice. Ayesha chimed in that she would just get them a beer instead. When Ayesha left to fetch the beer, Erika and Jacob told Janine that they thought Ayesha was so cool.

Ayesha returned and they continued to play the game as it was her turn. Her move gave her a choice to either stay and provide water to the land or take all the water and leave. She decided to leave, but the move resulted in Janine having to provide water for all of Asia. Ayesha told Janine that the point of the game is to survive, and she couldn't do that if she had to take care of everybody else. Janine sarcastically said that it was shocking that when things got tough, she would just leave. Janine added that it's because Ayesha abandoned people and that it was nice to finally hear her say it out loud. Not wanting to hear any more, Ayesha walked out of Janine's apartment. Janine followed her out shortly.

Ayesha asked Janine what her problem was, and Janine answered that she was staying at her house but didn't even think to spend time with her. She just left to do whatever she wanted just like she always did. She ran and hid when things got hard. Ayesha pointed out that people move from their hometowns all the time. Janine told her how hard it was dealing with their mother while she was away. Ayesha shared that it was hard to stay because she wasn't perfect like Janine who went to Penn and who people had hopes for. People gave up on her and she knew that their mother was the most disappointed in her. Janine responded that she understood why she left their mother, but it just felt like she left her, too. Jacob then called out to the sisters so they could finish their game. The two agreed to come back inside.

The following day, Ayesha visited Janine at Abbott. Ava noted how Ayesha looked like a grown-up version of Janine. Janine was surprised that Ayesha knew where she worked. Ayesha told her that her job was the biggest part of her life so of course she would know. They shared a laugh about their mother while Janine asked Ayesha to help her move the projector to Gregory's classroom.

Memorable Quotes[]

  • "People had hopes for you, and they gave up on me. You had it together. I didn't, and I couldn't get it together when Mom... When the person who needed me the most was the most disappointed in me. Yeah, fine, then. I couldn't take it. I couldn't handle it, so I ran. I left."
  • (After Janine tells a corny joke:) "I don't think comedy is something you can teach, you know? I feel like it's more something innate."
