Ava Eva Coleman[5] is a main character in ABC'S hit mockumentary Abbott Elementary. Ava is Abbott Elementary's inept principal despite displaying a high level of incompetence. Ava obtained her job as principal after blackmailing the superintendent. She harbors an attraction towards Gregory.

She is portrayed by American comedian Janelle James.

Personality[]

Outlandish, selfish, and objectively poor at her job as principal of Abbott, Ava is a chaotic figure among the staff. She has no prior experience in education but enjoys it nonetheless, even stating in "Ava vs. Superintendent" that being principal is the first job she's had that she actually likes.

She displays multiple instances of vanity, often using the school to accomplish this. Ava also displays a dismissiveness towards others and even declared Janine her "work nemesis" in "Holiday Hookah", with her and Jacob often being the butt of Ava's jokes as she likes to calls them "nerds" and "dorks".

Although she is considered inept at her job, she does occasionally show concern towards students like in "Light Bulb" where she is aware of a particular student being tardy for the sixth time in two weeks and tells Gregory to ensure the child comes to class on time, or in "Fundraiser" where she keeps extra school uniforms on hand for students who are not able to afford them. Even though she is bad at her job, she has grown to love it and has shown interest in learning how to be a better principal.[4]

In "Career Day", she is portrayed as 'serious Ava'. During the break, she attended a college through Education Connection while using Harvard's free WiFi. For a short time, she was focused on her job as a principal, not allowing so much as the bending of the rules. However, this proved to be only temporary, as after listening to Juvenile, she seemed to have reverted to the old Ava.
